Cheryl Cole- The Flood
- Genre
This music video is from the genre of pop and was the second song released as a single from Cheryl's album 'Messy Little Raindrops'.
- Narrative
Cheryl Cole's The Flood is a narrative based music video. As the title depicts this song is a natural disaster love often making allusions of shipwrecks, the sea and water which follow the title of the song. The song also reflects the loneliness the artist feels after the relationship is over, this explains why the artist is the only one in the video. The repeated visual of the artist blowing out the match and two hands separating imply to the audience that the relationship is over.
- Representation
this video shows representation of the feelings women feel after a relationship has went wrong and have eventually lost their love, sometimes blaming themselves as the lyrics say 'Still I can't help but think I could have saved you from drowning' implying she maybe could have saved the relationship.
- Media Language
There are many different camera shots used in this video ranging from long shots to extreme close ups. The close ups of the artist help the narrative progress as we see how the artist is feeling and it helps the audience generate their own emotions from the situation. The close ups also help support Goodwin's theory of 'Star Image' as the video is all of the artist and showing her beauty to sell the video.
The video doesn't include much editing as its trying to show the raw emotions the artist is feeling after the relationship has ended. In the parts when the artist is tossing and turning in her bed editing is used to manipulate the light, this is to imply to the audience that she is dreaming.
The mise en scene of this video is very realistic and natural for example the way the artist wears warm clothes in the harsh weather on the beach instead of wearing skimpy and provocative clothing to attract the attention of males. The location is ideal as the setting deeply reflects the lyrics using imagery of water and the stormy sea mirroring the lyrics 'the flood'
- Audience
This video is aimed at women as the lyrics tell the audience of how the artist is feeling, the way the artist is the only person in the video to signify the loneliness after the relationship ends. This video could also be aimed at the male gender as the artist is made to look very attractive when she is dressed as a mermaid and is laid provocatively on the rock the close ups of her face accent her beauty and may appeal to the male gender.
